Minister's Thought for the Week - 27th November 2011

“Seven Billion People and God Knows You!” This is what is written on a banner hanging outside a small church for the past few weeks. It refers to the recent event, which is supposed to have happened on the 31st October when the population of the world reached seven billion, (7,000,000,000) people. The world’s population is increasing at an ever-quickening rate. A check on the BBC website’s own population calculator revealed that when I was born in 1974 I was the 4,002,404,928th person in the world and since my birth billions of other babies have been born. These are huge numbers, difficult to get our heads around, so many people and yet the church banner reminds us that God knows each and everyone of us. This too can be difficult to grasp, God knows me and he knows you! What is perhaps even more amazing is that the Bible teaches us that God wants us to know him; this great God wants each individual to know him personally. As the church enters this time of advent, looking forward to Christmas and the birth of Jesus Christ, we remember that he is the Son of God and that Christ’s story from Christmas to Easter tells us that we can know God and be reconciled to him. For Christians the period of advent is looking forward to celebrating this momentous time in world history, all wrapped up in the form of a baby. It is great news for each and every one of the seven billion people in this world! Every blessing Peter |
