Earlier this week I came across this quote:
“If Joseph and Mary set off to Bethlehem from Nazareth today, they would cross 11 Israeli checkpoints, a security check, and a 30 foot wall”.
While I have not verified whether every point the writer makes is one hundred per cent accurate, it does paint a disturbing picture. As we know for many people in that small area of the world there are deep-seated divisions and life for many who live side by side is uneasy and potentially explosive.
When Joseph and Mary did make that journey 2000 years ago things were also unsettled and uneasy, the land was occupied by an foreign army and there were undercurrents of rebellion as the people waited for the long prophesied and promised Messiah, or the anointed one, the person who was to come and save the people. Jesus Christ is that Saviour, not the expected military leader, but the one who enables us to be at peace with God and shows us the way to love our neighbour.
As we recognise that the world is still divided and people live under the hardships of separation and division, let us all try and work together for greater peace in our world.
Every blessing
Peter
